Walk of Wisdom starts Action Clean Waal
Because a pilgrimage route is not only about connecting with yourself, but also with your environment, the Walk of Wisdom foundation is starting Action Clean Waal. Below is the letter I wrote to the mayor and citizens of Nijmegen.
Date : 28 July 2014
Subject : Action Clean Waal
OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR AND CITIZENS OF NIJMEGEN
As chairman of a pilgrimage route that ends along the beautiful Waal beaches of Nijmegen, I am annoyed to death by the rubbish: wild horses biting on cans of coke, plastic that is more numerous than the green. I’m shocked! I know I’m not the only one who is bothered. I also know that citizens and governments have been trying to do something about it since 2006. It is time for action and I ask you to help me do it.
I have created a website where people can sign up to help for one hour with cleaning up rubbish and handing out garbage bags. If 300 people from Nijmegen do that two or three times a year, we can enjoy a beautiful Waal all year round and everyone will know that you clean up your own mess in Nijmegen.
Dear Mayor, you recently introduced the concept of “Nijmegenism”: in Nijmegen we look at the world with a wide view and from a wide view at the city. You can do that like no other from the Waal beaches. Alone… that crap! I challenge you to live up to Nijmegenism and to set the right example as a good mayor by subscribing to one of the clean-up dates.
Dear citizens of Nijmegen, 300 of us are enough to solve the problem. Rolling up your sleeves two or three times for an hour, isn’t that something anyone can do? In any case, as of today, everyone who complains about the mess applies: don’t talk, but clean!
