Tips for where to stay
A few more addresses have been added to our overnight list that have a special and affordable rate for pilgrims. They do this out of solidarity with the route and the ideals of the pilgrimage – a nice gesture.
The nature of these types of addresses is very different: from a former girls’ boarding school with the original maisonettes (map 4, Ubbergen) to a gypsy wagon with a circular artist (map 10, Kranenburg, more expensive category – medium) or a yurt in the middle of the forest (map 15, Malden).
Of the existing addresses, we get the most enthusiastic reactions from pilgrims about:
- Ronald and Machteld’s bakehouse (map 18, Hatertse Vennen)
- The 18th century pilgrim monastery in Velp, which is still in its original state (map 21, near Grave). This is slightly more expensive (average rate), but most are happy to pay for it – it was voted one of the three quietest places in the Netherlands in 2010.
In the budget category, we get the most enthusiastic reactions about:
- B&B de Hoaf (map 7, Groesbeek)
- B&B In den Elsen and B&B Am Klinkenberg (Kranenburg, map 9 and 10)
- Landschapscamping de Zoete Aagt (maps 11 and 12)
- Gypsy wagon in Gassel near Grave (maps 20 and 21)
- The hiker’s cabin of B&B de Donk in Bergharen (map 28)
- The host families: carpenter Tejo (map 1 and 34, Nijmegen), Ryon (map 14, Mook), Heli and Drikus in Afferden (map 29).
Of course, this does not do justice to the other addresses! Look for all B&Bs, camping, hiker’s cabins here: link. The host families are on a separate list that pilgrims receive when they register via the website. Or email [email protected] stating your pilgrim number.
If you have walked the route as a pilgrim and you think that an address should be included: mail it to us!
Here is a nice video of B&B de Woeste Hoogte in Malden, which recently opened a yurt/hiker’s cabin in the middle of the forest. Pilgrims who have registered can sleep in the yurt for €22,-, breakfast is €4 and organic/vegan if you want.
Photo at the top: the maisonettes of the former girls’ boarding school in Ubbergen (“de Elegast”). It also has an organic breakfast.
