Summer pilgrimage opened

We’re celebrating our first anniversary – and 750 pilgrims! – by giving something back to the landscape this summer. We do this with short sponsored runs for nature and landscape projects on the route. The outline of the Walk of Wisdom resembles a flying bird, which is why the Bird Atlas of Sovon Bird Research is one of the projects: on 10 September, we will try to raise at least 200 euros per species for 20 bird species from the Atlas.

Pilgrim Middle Spotted Woodpecker

To kick things off, Ruud Foppen of Sovon ringed a Middle Spotted Woodpecker on the Wylerberg that he had caught that morning in the special nets of the field study centre. The woodpecker was given pilgrim number 2016 – 458 and was released by Iris (9) and Floris (11), the children of Joost Willems of Psychopraktijk de Vrije Ruimte, who generously sponsored the Walk of Walk of Wisdom last year.

The woodpecker is a rarity and the smaller brother of the much more common Great Spotted Woodpecker. The Middle One is now officially a pilgrim of the ‘path of your own wisdom’. We gave him the first issue of this year. In the meantime we have arrived at pilgrim 753.

• Bird Atlas Sponsored Run:
• Saturday 10 September, from 10.30 am, Stevenskerk Nijmegen
• The route is 7, 8 or 15 kilometers.

The registration fee is at least 5 euros and will be donated entirely to the Bird Atlas. In addition, walkers can get extra sponsors. All participants will receive a special bird ring from the Walk of Wisdom with ‘sponsor run WoW 2016’

Team for the Bird Atlas

You can also sign up with a team. If you think you can raise more than 100 euros, you can propose a favorite bird for the sponsored run. Your (team) name will also be mentioned in the Bird Atlas.
