Stubborn Mariken Monday: Nijmegen print as a gift
Intermedi-Art Art Affairs is raffling off the Nijmegenprent 2012 among participants in our sponsored run for the free opening of the Stevenskerk. The sponsored run is Monday 18 July 12.30 pm – Eigenwijze Mariken Monday – and is about the first and last kilometer of the Walk of Wisdom. The print by Marjoke Schulten (worth €650) depicts Mariken as a falconer. The picture also shows the Valkhof Chapel, which we will pass during the sponsored run.
Stubborn Mariken Monday is part of our Summer Pilgrimage sponsored runs. We celebrate our first anniversary and 750 pilgrims by giving back to the landscape. The Stevenskerk is the start and end point of our route and with the sponsor run we say thank you for the hospitality. Want to know more? Have a look here.
Marjoke Schulten’s colourful prints depict encounters between humans and animals. All with their own dreams and desires. They have a cheerful appearance, but that first impression is not complete. The characters strive for a certain goal that is not achievable or turns out to be an illusion. In her Nijmegen print, she combines a girl from the city – Mariken van Nieumeghen as a falconer – with the double eagle from the coat of arms of Nijmegen. At the bottom right of the composition is the Nicholas Chapel, at the foot of the city.
