Spiritual counsellor and writer Marinus van den Berg
Spiritual counselor and poet/writer Marinus van den Berg has become the forerunner of the Walk of Wisdom.
Marinus van den Berg has been working as a chaplain in a hospice in Rotterdam since 1998, where he guides people from various cultural backgrounds through the dying process. Before that, he was a pastoral educator in Almelo.
Marinus van den Berg has written dozens of books and poetry collections about death and bereavement. The tone of his books is loving, but at the same time honest: he wants to discuss death and pain and not disguise it. He gained national notoriety after the shocking suicide of a bullied student in 2012 who posted a farewell letter on the internet. Marinus van den Berg represented the parents of the student and was their spokesperson in the media. His dignified performance was a welcome respite from the turbulence of all the attention.
Marinus van den Berg has written a poem for our book of hours and pilgrims, among other things, and has thus become a symbolic forerunner of the route. “Death is part of life,” says Marinus. The question of what this means for you as a human being is an important question to ‘consider’ during a pilgrimage.
