Social worker Leyla Çakir forerunner

Leyla-Cakir PortraitWe are happy that Leyla Çakir has become a forerunner of the Walk of Walk of Wisdom. Leyla is a social worker and was born into a Turkish immigrant family.

From 2007 to 2013, she was president of the independent Muslim women’s organization Al Nisa. Before that, she was the first female chairman of a mosque in the Netherlands. As a community worker in a deprived neighbourhood, she was successful in promoting contacts between residents (native and immigrant) on the basis of her own method in which mutual recognition and acceptance are central.

She is known for her perseverance, creativity, and ability to enthuse people. Themes in her work are women and Islam, migration and multiculturalism and making (spiritual) connections between people.

She wrote this haiku for Limburg Live:

The world stops there

Where Eternity Goes On

and peace finds us.

She says: “Ever since I was young, I’ve always been socially engaged. My passion is to make connections between people and to inspire them to look differently at each other and the barriers in their lives.”

And that, of course, fits in perfectly with the goals we have with the Walk of Wisdom!
