Pilgrimage in high season – tips for staying overnight

,

What about the sleeping options available on the route? It is the middle of summer and there are many tourists in the region in addition to pilgrims. You don’t notice much of it while walking, but when booking the overnight stays, you do: all those tourists use B&Bs, airbnb, friends on bicycles, etc. A few tips to arrange your overnight stay:

  • Join our facebook group ‘pilgrims of the walk of wisdom’
A lot of tips are exchanged here. For example, recently a pilgrim who was told FULL everywhere found a B&B/host family who wanted to pick her up at various points on the route. Dangerous.
  • Take advantage of our list of host families
This will be included in the confirmation email when you register. If you have registered in the Stevenskerk, please email [email protected] stating your registration number.
  • Set up one central sleeping address as your own pilgrim’s living room
Tip from a pilgrim. From many points on the route there is a direct bus or train connection to Nijmegen. You can book a host family, couchsurfing or Airbnb address for a week and then return to your own place every night.
  • Go camping, e.g. on a permanent campsite with good public transport
There is still a place at most campsites. Our favourite is camping de But in Groesbeek, a very quiet, non-commercial campsite where there are no events and you get your own piece of forest. You can get there quickly from Nijmegen Central Station: bus 5 to Groesbeek, stop Dekkerswald, cross the road, enter the forest and go straight on to the campsite.
  • Book an overnight stay one seat back or ahead on your route
If there is no room in one place, there may be room in the next. Use public transport or ask your overnight address if they might be willing to pick you up where you offer to pay for the petrol.

Good luck and have a nice trip!
