New ambassador: Hans Teunissen, Mayor of Gennep
The Walk of Wisdom has a new ambassador: Hans Teunissen, the mayor of Gennep. Teunissen has been in office for a number of years. He succeeded Peter de Koning, who was also an ambassador of our pilgrimage route at the time. We welcome this support at the highest municipal level. This helps with our social support.
Who is Hans Teunissen
The mayor’s grandfather is from the region and he himself speaks the regional dialect. A city councillor called him ‘enne from here‘. Teunissen said at the time of his appointment that he “especially wants to be there for people who are struggling”. He was previously a member of the provincial executive in Limburg on behalf of D66 and an alderman in Venray (source: Gelderlander).
In his New Year’s speech, he called for 2024 to be made the year of “cooperation and dialogue”. According to his X account, Teunissen is more of a cyclist than a walker, but he responded within the hour to our request to become an ambassador. Thank you so much!
Milsbeek
The Walk of Wisdom runs through eleven municipalities, including a small part of Gennep: Milsbeek. At Milsbeek, the pilgrims come out of the great Reichswald and can go to our staging area eatery De Diepen. One of the specialties there is the ‘Christoffel flan’. Christopher is, among other things, the patron saint of travelers and also pilgrims (more). Many pilgrims know where to find De Diepen for the much-loved hiker’s huts.
After De Diepen, our route goes through a recently restored swamp area to the fairytale forests of the Sint-Jansberg.
