More than €2,000 for the landscape and culture

The sown verge at the end of the route was in bloom last year

After a temporary setback at the beginning of the corona crisis, registrations for the Walk of Wisdom have increased sharply. As of 1 May, an average of 6.9 new pilgrims registered per day – a total of 2,098 pilgrims (in 2019: 1,446) – which means that we have extra budget for the landscape and culture. We set aside one euro of each registration fee to give back to the nature and culture on our route. It’s our thank you and our expression of belonging.

Last year we paid an advance on this pilgrim’s contribution to, among others: Stichting Vrienden van de Stevenskerk (one day the minor maintenance of the church), the Dutch Cultural Landscape Association, Natuurmonumenten, Stichting Landschap Groesbeek-Ooij (Landschap Heerlijkheid Beek) and Vereniging De Ploegdriever.

In addition, we attached several birdhouses along the route, including along the last part of the route towards Nijmegen where our flower verge was also in bloom (see photo) and we donated an owl box at the cemetery in Beek. This year it will be installed behind the attic window of the chapel.

At the beginning of 2021, we also partly earmarked the extra amount by making an extra contribution to the Stevenskerk . We will allocate the remaining amount in combination with the Landscape Contribution for 2021, which is based on 2,000 registered pilgrims.
