Mookerheide natural cemetery extra stop

The Mookerheide natural cemetery has become an extra stop for the Walk of Wisdom.

Our pilgrimage route of 136 kilometers around Nijmegen goes through 11 municipalities. Our starter kit contains a shoelace on which you can collect bird rings with the name of the municipality on them. A nice souvenir and as a pilgrim you know that in every municipality there are people who welcome you in our stops.

Because the stops are of course not always open, we have two in each municipality. At many stops there is also a birdhouse with our rings in it. For Mook, these are Natuurmonumenten in the greenhouse behind Jachtslot Mookerheide and the cozy inn ‘t Zwaantje. Because ‘t Zwaantje is two kilometers from the route and the birdhouse near the greenhouse often becomes empty, we have a new house: on the wall of the information point of Mookerheide Nature Cemetery.

The natural cemetery is located in the nature reserve of Natuurmonumenten and is managed by Natuurbegraven Nederland. Since 2019, it has been possible to choose a final resting place in nature. This can be done in a coffin or urn and the burial rights are eternal. Natuurbegraven Nederland also invests in the nature of Natuurmonumenten.

The information centre is 300 metres from the Hunting Lodge. It is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00 (Sunday 11:00 to 16:00). The building is a former school of the Dominican Sisters of Bethany who had it built on the estate in 1955. After the Second World War, the sisters lived in the Hunting Lodge, which at that time was St. It was called the Dominic’s convent and was a boarding school for girls who had been placed in care. The former school is now an information centre and ceremony room. The birdhouse with our rings hangs on the side of the information center, near the seating area with the iron patio chairs.
