Landscape contribution: €365 for Stevenskerk
Last Sunday – June 21st, the day of our (fifth!) birthday – we donated €365 to the Stevens Church in Nijmegen. The church is the most popular monument in Nijmegen and stands proudly on top of a hill. The Nijmegen resident who sees the tower knows that he is at home. Our pilgrims also come ‘home’ when they see the tower: the church is the start and end point of our 136-kilometre route around the city.
Why does our modern journey start in a church apart from a religion? Because the building is the heart of the city and since its beginning in 1272 it has always been more than just a church. For example, the city rights were kept here, along with other important documents. In the Middle Ages, an entire city could easily go up in flames; The church was one of the few buildings made of stone to be a safe shelter. Nowadays, ceremonies of the university take place here and the Four Days Marches Festivities are traditionally opened here every year.
The church is closed until July 1 due to the Corona crisis. She has had no income for months due to the cancellation of events and we are therefore extra happy to be able to transfer our annual “Steveniers’ contribution”. An amount of €365,-, with which we cover the daily maintenance costs for one day.
Thanks to the last 365 pilgrims who signed up for our tour: the contribution has been saved from your registration fee!
