First pilgrim parcels sent
The first 35 starting tickets for runners who are going to make a ‘walk of wisdom’ have been sent. Volunteers from the Walk of Wisdom foundation prepared the packages for an afternoon. A starter kit includes a metal bird ring on a leather shoelace (the ‘pilgrim’s lace’). The bird ring has the pilgrim’s registration number and the year he or she will run.
Together with a 99mm version of the icon of the Walk of Wisdom , the bird ring serves as proof of registration. During the walk, eleven other bird rings will be hung on the shoelace, each with the name of the eleven municipalities along the route. In this way, pilgrims can prove that they have walked the entire 136-kilometre route of the Walk of Wisdom around Nijmegen.
The Walk of Wisdom pilgrimage route will be opened on June 21 at 12.30 p.m. in the Stevens Church in Nijmegen by Mayor Bruls with, among other things, a ‘thunder sermon’ by Jan Terlouw. The route also passes through the municipalities of Berg en Dal, Kranenburg, Milsbeek (Gennep), Mook, Heumen, Grave, Oss, Wijchen, Druten and Beuningen.
