Chestnuts and generosity

24-10-2015, Caren, Pilgrim 372

When I was a little girl, about 40 years ago, I would sit at dinner with my ears pricked up and listen to the sound of falling chestnuts. Mr. Overman took it with him from his work, Gilze-Rijen Air Base. As he walked home from the bus stop, he threw a handful into the neighborhood’s children’s gardens. We peeled the chestnuts carefully and ate them – with a little salt – for dessert. I still like to pick chestnuts and think back to Mr. Overman. It’s amazing how such a small gesture of generosity stays with you for decades.

Inspired by the website ditgeeftzin.nl , a route camera is circulating on which pilgrims can leave one photo of a place or situation that symbolizes something important to them, e.g. a theme or feeling. Read more.
