Action Home Sparrow gets wings

The Bird Working Group Nijmegen e.o. invests an extra €400 in our campaign for nesting boxes for house sparrows: Action Home Sparrow.

The house sparrow is not doing well, partly due to improved insulation of houses, which means that the sparrows can no longer build nests under the roof tiles (more). Together with pilgrims, we saved €600 last year for the local bird protection and with the extra money from the Bird Working Group we are now going to buy €1,000 worth of nesting boxes. We give them as a gift at bus stops and B&Bs’ on the route with the possibility to buy one more.

We have already approached the bus stops, we will write to the B&Bs soon. These are already participating:

  • Stopover café-restaurant de Diepen in Milsbeek. The first to respond buys another one.
  • Stop at the inn ‘t Zwaantje in Mook. Buy no less than three more nesting boxes!
  • Stop: Glider-Inn Malden.
  • Stop at the Grave Tourist Office. Discuss whether this is allowed at the monumental building, otherwise the nest box will be placed with a volunteer.
  • Stop at coffee and tea house De Loonse Schuur in Neerloon, below Ravenstein.
  • Stop at café-restaurant de Leurse Hof in Leur, just after Wijchen.
  • Stop at café Tabaksplant in Afferden.
  • Stop at the Dijkmagazijn Beuningen.
  • B&B de Holtse Hoek, owned by the ambassador of Balgoy, Rudy van Haren.
  • Host family Esther de Hoon in Balgoy.

Which nest box is it?

We choose a wood-concrete nesting box from Vivara. These are slightly more expensive than wooden nesting boxes, but they are much more durable. They are made of a mixture of wood fibers and concrete and last as long as a house.
